Remember the days when you would tell students to put away their electronic devices? Now, nearly one-third of students in the United States have school-issued mobile devices to assist in the learning process, and that ratio is likely to grow exponentially over the next few years. The discipline of teaching is ever-changing as more mediums become available. Still, with the right resources, this can aid your classroom, especially if you are
teaching math at a distance. Here are the top online tools that will make your life easier and your teaching more effective!
It's difficult enough for High School Calculus teachers to help their students understand this type of math in person. Working online in a digital classroom, however, can multiply the challenges of teaching Calculus. Derivita assists math teachers online by using a computer algebra system to evaluate the work students do — including open-ended questions! And, unlike most online math programs, Derivita can also provide feedback based on a student's unique work, not just a generic response.
For educators, Derivita has a dashboard that provides a synopsis of the class's grades and proficiencies on different topics, which lets instructors easily identify knowledge gaps or items for review. Derivita can be adapted for use in an online, hybrid, or in-person classroom.
One of the primary things you are preparing students for in High School Calculus is to take the AP Calculus test. However, when teaching math online or in a hybrid class, it can be hard to tell if students are truly learning or if they are finding answers online. CollegeBoard.com contains a host of great tools to help students practice and prepare online for the AP test — plus, it's constantly being updated to ensure the sample test and instructions to adequately prepare students to how the actual AP test changes each year. With this resource, you won't have to worry whether your students are ready for the AP test — every sample question perfectly represents the type of questions they will be asked on the exam.
Brightstorm is an absolutely free resource with an amazing number of brief, tutorial videos. Almost like a TikTok video, but for Calculus. Sometimes, all students are missing is just another angle to view a concept from. So, supplementing your teaching with Brightstorm's free videos may help round out your students' understanding of various topics.
When you look up this tool, make sure to type it into your search engine, not just let it take you to the suggested website, or you'll end up somewhere else! Calculus.org is worth the small effort it takes to find, though — it has a very long list of resources for both learning and teaching math online that you can use with your students. A few examples? There are sample questions and exams, classroom demonstrations, links to other calculus sites, online Calculus textbooks (all free), videos, and even the history of Calculus! That's only scratching the surface — you'll have to do a deep dive yourself to get the most out of this resource.
Teaching Calculus is hard enough and teaching online or in a hybrid environment shouldn't have to be any harder! You deserve to have access to all the resources available as you help students understand the amazing world of Calculus. With these tools at your disposal, it can be a positive experience for both you and your students.
