Why We Love SpotCheck

In a hybrid, online, or even an in-person mathematics course, it can be like pulling teeth to get your students to actively engage and participate in your class. Here, at Derivita, we know that this is a common struggle for teachers, instructors, TA’s, and professors. Which is why we developed SpotCheck to solve this every-day challenge within the classroom. SpotCheck is a versatile, digital tool that can be accessed by all students and Derivita users on any device with a simple URL.

This singular online tool has the ability to:

  • Assess students in real time
  • Identify and address knowledge gaps when they occur
  • Increases in-class engagement and participation
  • Improves mathematical discussion

SpotCheck

So how does it work?

Start your class off with questions from a previous homework assignment or assessment and project them on your screen board directly through the Derivita platform. These SpotCheck questions can be custom built by you or picked from the 60,000+ Derivita math item bank that covers everything from basic Algebra to AP Calculus.

With just the SpotCheck URL, students can pull up the question on their preferred device. Here you can give them a select amount of time to respond to the math prompts. On their smartphones, tablets, laptops, or desktop computers the students can then select, type in, drop in, draw in, or design their response in minutes.

Once the students submit their answer, real-time analytics on the SpotCheck prompts are immediately available. After student submission, you can post the correct answer and the number of students who answered correctly. These features can help you and your students to go over the questions, their responses, and fully-worked out solutions with various workarounds
together and all within the introduction of your course.

SpotCheck will help your student not just speak more in your class, but be able to actively compare and contrast their ideas with their peers, visualize new pathways to the correct solution, and build their confidence with the mathematical concepts.
